About Dr Paul Head

A World Leading Researcher in Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation and Blood Flow Restriction. Optimising Muscle Strength, Size, Pain, and Function for Healthy and Clinical Populations

Welcome to the world of groundbreaking research and transformative rehabilitation. I am Paul, a distinguished PhD candidate exploring the powerful synergy of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) combined with Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) to enhance muscle strength, size, pain relief, and function. My research journey focuses on optimizing outcomes both pre and post surgical operations and after injuries, with a special interest in post-operative cases like ACL reconstructions, total hip and knee replacements, and addressing knee, spine, and shoulder injuries.

A Track Record of Excellence

With a wealth of experience and expertise, I now exclusively serve in private practice and professional sport: golf, cricket, tennis and football, building on my previous valuable contributions within the NHS. My dedication to the field of physiotherapy has seen me work alongside international athletes from rugby, football, cricket, and athletics, offering personalized rehabilitation and performance enhancement strategies.

Empowering Athletes to Achieve Greatness

One of my proudest achievements involved rehabilitating a Judo athlete from a broken leg in February 2021, enabling them to compete in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Beyond individual success stories, I have also provided educational services to esteemed clubs like Crystal Palace Football Club and Leeds United Football Club, imparting valuable knowledge to their medical teams.

Sharing Knowledge Nationally and Internationally

In addition to my research and clinical practice, I am privileged to have taught professional sports teams' medical departments nationally and internationally. These educational sessions focus on optimizing clinical outcomes using the powerful combination of NMES with BFR. By sharing insights and evidence-based techniques, I aim to empower fellow healthcare professionals to enhance their patients' recovery and performance.

Credentials and Affiliations

As a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists and registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council in the UK, I adhere to the highest professional standards. Additionally, I am a distinguished member of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sport and the UK Strength and Conditioning Association, further demonstrating my commitment to continuous learning and development.

A Journey of Excellence

My path to excellence commenced with a Bachelor's degree in Sports Therapy at the University of Central Lancashire, followed by a Masters in Physiotherapy at Kings College London. This foundation propelled me into the pursuit of knowledge, and I embarked on my transformative PhD at St Mary's University in 2016, set to culminate in 2022. Alongside my research, my work has been published in multiple international journals, and I've had the honor of delivering lectures and training sessions on optimizing muscle strength and size during the rehabilitation period, both nationally and internationally.

A Collaborative and Client-Centric Approach

At the core of my practice lies a collaborative approach, working closely with each client to uncover tailored solutions for acute or long-standing issues. Whether you're an elite athlete or an individual seeking to regain your full potential, I am here to support your journey towards optimal health and performance.

Thank you for joining me on this transformative research and rehabilitation voyage. Together, let's unlock new dimensions of physical excellence and well-being.
